Understanding the OUAC Application Process: Tips and Tricks for Mississauga Families

As your child begins their final year in high school, you must ensure that they’re ready for higher education and confident enough to navigate university applications. At USCA Academy, we can support you and your child through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC).

Every aspiring university student must understand how the OUAC application centre works. As the centralised hub for undergraduate applications to Ontario universities, the OUAC streamlines the application process. Instead of applying to each school individually, students can use this platform to explore programs, submit applications, and track their admission statuses efficiently. This simplifies the process of applying to multiple universities.

Why use OUAC?

The OUAC application centre provides a user-friendly and cohesive interface for navigating the path to higher education. It processes applications for undergraduate admissions to all Ontario universities, serving as an all-in-one platform to apply to multiple programs and universities with only one application form.

As your child prepares for the next step in their academic journey, make sure they know about the OUAC and encourage them to make an account. Read on as we share tips and tricks for using this unified application centre to streamline your child’s admission to their dream program and school.

How to make the most of OUAC

Before signing up for OUAC, your child must meet the criteria for admission to Ontario universities. Here are the prerequisites for undergraduate enrolment:

·      Your child must be actively pursuing high school and enrolled in a local school like USCA Academy.

·      Their academic progress must be consistent without pausing. If your child had to stop for a while, it shouldn’t exceed 7 months.

·      In the process of completing high school and qualified to receive the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Additionally, they must achieve specified grades in 6 4U/M courses.

·      If your child has already graduated and has their OSSD, ensure they haven’t attended any post-secondary institution yet.

·      Below the age of 21 at the time of applying through the OUAC application centre.

·      Interested in pursuing an undergraduate program at an Ontario university.

Fulfill the benchmarks for enrolment.

By following the conditions above, your child can sign up and use the OUAC to streamline applications to Ontario universities. In addition, fulfilling those benchmarks shows your child’s appropriateness and preparedness for university life.

Does your child need to provide their grades?

We won’t send your child’s marks directly to the OUAC application centre. Instead, your child must self-report their grades when they complete their application through the platform.

A step-by-step guide to signing up for OUAC

When your child is ready to apply for university, take the time to walk them through these steps to eliminate the guesswork from making an account and using the OUAC.

Step 1: Research universities and courses

Your child’s journey through OUAC starts before they sign up. We recommend researching various universities and programs by browsing official websites. It’s also a chance to note OUAC codes for specific programs and see the eligibility criteria, application deadlines, and admission requirements.

Step 2: Make an account

Once you have universities and programs in mind and the OUAC codes, it’s time to visit the OUAC application centre to make a personal account. As a new user, your child must provide accurate personal information. Once they have an account, remind them to note their login credentials to simplify future access.

Step 3: Fulfill all sections

An OUAC application has several sections that require careful completion. Besides entering personal information, your child must disclose their academic background and accurately indicate the programs they want. Make sure all sections are meticulously completed without any discrepancies.

Step 4: Go over the sections and confirm the application

You can update the details later, but it’s best to carefully review the whole application before submission. Encourage your child to verify selected programs and their academic and personal information.

Tip: Different programs have various submission deadlines, so be sure to complete the application before the designated time.

Step 5: Submit the OUAC application and pay the necessary fees

Once you’re confident about the application, submit it with the necessary processing fee before specific program deadlines. The OUAC application centre will provide a unique reference number, which you should note for future reference.

Step 6: Verify the 105 applications

Remind your child to log back into their OUAC account to review their 105 application. They should verify the application status and ensure completeness and accuracy. If necessary, they can modify or update the information provided.

Step 7: Wait for emails

Make sure your child checks their emails, as universities and OUAC may reach out to them. All correspondence, from the application’s progress and additional requirements to special offers, will be sent by email.

Step 8: Get additional assistance when necessary

Representatives from the OUAC application centre can offer further guidance and answer queries throughout your application process. So, don’t hesitate to reach out for clarification or support with any related concerns, including the application status.

Navigating the OUAC with confidence

By following the steps above with diligence and staying vigilant on correspondence and deadlines, your child can navigate the OUAC application centre confidently and improve their chances of successful admissions.

Wait for acknowledgement emails.

All the universities your child applied to will send an acknowledgement email when they receive the application through OUAC. Make sure your child has enabled email notifications on their phone or device so they don’t miss anything.

Note important deadlines and dates.

The dates and deadlines for applications in Ontario Universities change every year. For instance, the deadline for the completed applications for 2023-2024 was on January 15, 2024. So, be sure your child is up-to-date. We recommend checking back with us to see the updated dates for the upcoming year.

Plan accordingly

Advise your child to create an application timeline to stay organised and meet all the necessary deadlines. Besides checking the OUAC application centre, it helps to see every university’s website for specific requirements and dates. These deadlines vary, so be sure to pay attention.

Prepare the application documents.

Help your child prepare the necessary documents to complete their application on OUAC. They need their high school transcripts and references from mentors or teachers. Additionally, make sure your child is ready to provide compelling essays that reflect the goals and values of every university.
