Things You Should Know About Ontario Secondary School Diplomas

What is the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)? Essentially, it is an official document regulated by the Ontario Ministry of Education, serving as proof that a student has completed high school. 

Students with an OSSD have to meet the Ontario Secondary School Curriculum's expectations and uphold the standard of knowledge based on a set of requirements. 

Here is a quick guide to the various OSSD requirements:

1. Students must earn a total of 30 credits, 18 of which are from compulsory courses, while the remaining 12 are optional. The required credits are listed below:

a. 4 credits in English

b. 3 credits in Math

c. 2 credits in Science

d. 1 credit each in Canadian History, Canadian Geography, Health and Physical Education, and French as a Second Language

e. 0.5 credits each in Career Studies and Civics

2. Students must pass the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) or the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC).

3. Students must complete at least 40 hours of community service or volunteer work.

Where can you obtain an OSSD? There are several educational providers in Canada that offer programs for both local and international students. These programs are available for middle school graduates, current Grade 9 to 12- course takers, or International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program course takers.
